Oakland construction accident: 9 workers hurt in collapse

Nine workers were injured Friday when a building partially collapsed at an Oakland construction site near downtown, forcing a desperate and successful effort to free many of them from wet concrete.

No workers were seriously injured in the collapse, which took place around 9:30 a.m. at 3093 Broadway, said Oakland Fire Battalion Chief Ian McWhorter.

While as many as 20 people fell from scaffolding, only about a dozen were taken to a nearby hospital.

When police and firefighters arrived, they found some of the workers hanging from the scaffolding while others were up to their knees in wet concrete. Others were struggling desperately with shovels to dig their co-workers out.
