RESEARCHERS TEST SOLAR DESALINATION

ASCE   12 May 2015   USA   New Mexico

An innovative system combines solar energy and electrodialysis to address the problem of brackish groundwater in parts of the developing world that are off the electrical grid.

May 12, 2015—In early April, research teams arrived in Alamogordo, New Mexico, on the edge of the Chihuahuan Desert, to test the systems they developed to desalinate brackish groundwater in a cost-effective, energy-efficient manner. The systems address a problem facing large portions of India and many other developing parts of the world, where residents must rely on brackish groundwater as a source of drinking water and have little or no access to the electrical grid.
