Switzerland earthquake: Tremor near Zurich also felt in Italy and Germany

A moderate earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.6 has struck southeast of Zurich, with shaking felt in Liechtenstein, Austria, southern Germany, and northern Italy, residents and seismologists say.

The earthquake, which struck at 9:12 p.m. local time on Monday, was centered at Wägitalersee lake, about 44 kilometers (27 miles) southeast of Zurich. It struck at a depth of about 10 kilometers, making it a shallow earthquake.

The Swiss Seismological Service put the preliminary magnitude of the earthquake at 4.6, making it a light to moderate earthquake. The earthquake was widely felt across the region, with shaking being felt in Zurich and Bern in Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, southern Germany, and northern Italy.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, but the Swiss Seismological Service said the quake may have caused minor damage. Many people who felt the earthquake described it as a sudden but short jolt.
