Variable Direction Cyclic Simple Shear

The variable direction cyclic simple shear system (VDCSS) allows simple shear to be performed in 2 directions, rather than the standard one. This is achieved by having a secondary shear actuator that acts at 90 degrees to the primary shear actuator.  The VDCSS is similar in principle to the EMDCSS machine, except for the additional horizontal axis.  All standard simple shear tests can be performed.  When used as a variable direction machine, the secondary shear axis can be used independently of the other shear axis or in conjunction with is, therefore simple shear may be performed in any horizontal direction.  Used for simulating change in wind direction on a wind turbine without having to remove the sample.
