GOTTHARD BASE TUNNEL, SWITZERLAND, EXPERIENCES WITH DIFFERENT TUNNELLING METHODS (2008)

At the time when it is completed, the Gotthard Base Tunnel in Switzerland, with a total length of 57 km, will be the longest railway tunnel in the world. The complete tunnel system consists of 153.3 km of access tunnels, shafts, railway tunnels, connecting galleries and auxiliary structures. Excavation of the main system started in 2002. More than 108 km, or more than 70% of the full 153.3 km of tunnel system, had been completed by the end of March 2008. Conventional tunnelling as well as excavation by TBM have been used. The experience gained is sufficient to allow conclusions to be drawn regarding each method.
