ASSESSING THE VERTICAL DISTRIBUTION AND VISIBILITY OF ROCKFALL SCARS IN TREES (2005)

As rockfall consists of falling, bouncing or rolling rocks, impacts on trees occur almost anywhere between ground and several meters above. This paper therefore focuses on 307 discs from three trees to assess the vertical distribution and the visibility of scars on stem surfaces. Results show that scars can be observed at heights of up to nine meters and that signs of past rockfall activity are no longer visible in up to 49% of cases.
