PERFORMANCE BASED DESIGN, WOULD IT HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE IN CHRISTCHURCH? (2012)

This paper compares the historical and current approaches to building design in New Zealand with the performance based design approaches currently used in the United States under the framework of ASCE 41. Examples of building performance during the recent Canterbury earthquakes will be used to demonstrate how a performance based 
design approach can assess performance for buildings and verify equivalent performances using alternative designs.
