IGNORING ENGINEERING GEOLOGY A COSTLY MISTAKE AT PENTALIA, CYPRUS (2008)

The south west area of Cyprus has a long history of slope instability, particularly in areas of high elevation. This paper presents a case study whereby a new road was constructed in 2002 to link the villages of Nata, Pentalia and Panayia. The laying out of the road, however, ignored the engineering geology of the area. This omission has been costly, resulting in a segment of the road being subject to recurrent localized failures. The timeline of these instabilities is presented. After exploring several stabilization options the decision was finally made to move the road.
