This chapter addresses the design and construction of bridge approach embankments, earth embankments, and lightweight fills. Static loading as well as seismic loading conditions are covered, though for a more detailed assessment of seismic loading on embankment performance, see NYSDOT GDM Chapter 9. The primary geotechnical issues that impact embankment performance are overall stability, internal stability, settlement, materials, and construction.
