UNDERSTANDING THE BEHAVIOUR OF UNPAVED ROADS ON SOFT CLAY (1999)

An approximate calculation, based on bearing capacity theory, is presented for the ultimate capacity of an unreinforced or reinforced unpaved road, idealized as a granular fill over clay. The calculation is calibrated against rigorous numerical analyses to determine an equivalent load-spread angle. The method is then compared with experimental results for unreinforced and reinforced roads in both plane strain and axial symmetry.
