Howard Maxwell, president of Synergy Software, and Lonnie Abelbeck, president of Abelbeck Software, came from a large corporation environment where they used various terminals in conjunction with company mini/mainframe equipment. In 1984, Mr. Maxwell and his wife, Barbara, had already begun a computer-oriented business, and Mr. Abelbeck began developing terminal emulation / file transfer software to use with his then, "new" Macintosh computer. Housed in the same facility, they combined their expertise to bring VersaTerm to the marketplace in January 1985. KaleidaGraph was introduced in January 1988 under the direction of developer, Mr. William Jones.
