The use of the Pocket Penetrometer will provide a fast indication of soil consistency, shear strength, and approximate unconfined shear strength. The Humboldt Pocket Penetrometer is a spring-operated device with a 1/4in (6.4mm) dia. loading piston that is pushed into the soil up to the calibration groove which is machined into the piston 1/4in from the end. The permanent, direct-reading scale on the piston barrel of the penetrometer reads approximate unconfined compressive strength in tsf² or kg/cm². An indicator sleeve retains the reading after piston is released. The spring is calibrated and plated for rust resistance. The complete penetrometer weighs only 2oz (57g); dia. is .75 inch (19mm) and length is 6 inches (152mm). An Adapter Foot Attachment is available for use in soft soils.
