Inspection found cracked, flaking sidewalls at site of Syracuse rail bridge collapse
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- An inspection 13 month ago of a stretch of elevated railroad bridge that collapsed this month found flaking and cracking in the bridge's sidewalls, according to records obtained by Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard.
Despite the cracking and flaking, the inspector - hired by the railroad - affirmed the railroad bridge itself still was in "fair to good" condition. The bridge had the structural capacity to safely carry rail traffic, the inspector said.
