Soil collapse in Arta-Ioannina (NW Greece)

On October the 19th, an extensive soil collapse has occurred in close proximity to a residential area and the service road connecting Arta-Ioannina.

According to the first estimations, an area of approximately 80-100 sq.m. has collapsed creating a crater of 4-5m depth.

According to Professor Eythymios Lekkas, the soil collapse might be related to the recent seismic event of the 15th October. It has to be noted that the predominant bedrock material in the specific area is limestone where karstic features are primarily formed.
