REAPPRAISAL OF THE EFFECT OF VERTICAL GROUND MOTIONS ON RESPONSE (2000)

This report sought to answer the question: does the vertical component of ground motion constitute a significant proportion of the loading that has to be resisted by a building and by its foundations. It concentrates on ground motion in the near-field where the importance of vertical accelerations is greatest. Ambraseys & Simpson (1996) give results concerning the near-field behaviour of the vertical to horizontal acceleration ratio.
