DEFORMATION AND MONITORING OF WASTE DUMP SLOPES

This paper reviews mechanisms of waste dump failure and discusses the nature of the deformations which occur, before and during the start of failure. Surface slides, base spreading and deep seated failure are considered. Methods of monitoring deformation and appropriate instrumentation systems are described. Both dump crest and dump toe systems are considered and the relative merits discussed.
