CASE HISTORY OF EAST TENNESSEE KARST, STATIC STABILITY OF SOME SHALLOW CAVES (2001)
A case history of a static evaluation of some shallow caves in the karstic geologic region of East Tennessee is presented. The evaluation consists of three parts: (1) characterization of the bedrock voids and openings, (2) rock characterization, and (3) finite element (FE) stress analysis. The bedrock void and rock characterizations are performed to determine the representative bedrock void geometry and to estimate rock mass properties taking into account the frequency and orientation of fractures, the condition of the rock along fractures and the groundwater conditions.
