A 7.1 magnitude quake rocked the South Pacific island of New Caledonia, based about 800 miles west of Fiji at 4.51am BST (2.51pm local time Tuesday).
It struck at a depth of 10km (six miles) about 372 km (230 miles) east of the island’s capital Noumea.
Wave fluctuations of up to a metre above the normal tide were expected, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned shortly after.
But the tsunami threat has now passed, according to officials.
