LIQUEFACTION IN THE 2011 GREAT EAST JAPAN EARTHQUAKE: LESSONS FOR U.S. PRACTICE (2011)

Liquefaction in the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake will provide important lessons for the geotechnical profession regarding the seismic performance of a wide range of geotechnical and constructed facilities affected by liquefaction. This paper examines three aspects of observed liquefaction effects and discusses how they relate to current issues in geotechnical practice in the U.S. Potential opportunities for international group research efforts stemming from each of these examples are also discussed.
