A REVIEW ON SELECTION OF TUNNELING METHOD AND PARAMETERS EFFECTING GROUND SETTLEMENTS (2016)

With the urban population increasing, conurbation is getting more and more crowed, traffic jam happens everywhere. In this case, utilization of the underground space has become an effective way to undertake this set of problems. Tunnel construction is one of the important infrastructure projects, which is vital for enhancing the transportation networks, especially in congested cities. Tunnel projects are characterized by high risk, complexities, uncertainties, repetitive construction tasks, large budgets and long durations. Several tunneling method like earth pressure balance machine, slurry and variable density tunnel boring machine have been developed in the tunnel construction industry to improve the constructability of tunnels and decrease the impact on surrounding structures. This review paper presents a framework for selecting the appropriate tunneling method with respect to the induced ground surface settlements. Parameters which have significant influence on the ground surface settlement will also be discussed in this paper. This paper will help the contractors, engineers and designer in selecting appropriate method and estimating the required cost and time for construction of a tunnel.
